Lifetone Technology Recalls Fire Alarm and Clocks | Product Recall Lawyer

On November 8, 2018, Lifetone Technology recalled a  product due to a hazard. The bedside Fire Alarm and Clock was found to be defective, failing to operate and fulfilling its purpose of alerting consumers of fires. The recall—number 19-031—affects approximately 10,000 units.

The affected products consist of the following serial numbers:

    • AC160600001 through AC160604102
    • AC170100001 through AC170106030

These units were sold online via Lifetone’s website and installed by fire departments and the Red Cross throughout the country. The defective units were purchased at approximately $215 each during the almost 2-year timeframe between November 2016 and September 2018.

According to the recall issued by Lifetone Technology, consumers should stop using the recalled fire alarm and clocks and contact the company for more information on returning the product and receiving a replacement.

About the Product and the Hazard

The Fire Alarm and Clock is designed for consumers with hearing loss. The alarm and clock is an assistive device; in other words, it works alongside alarms to help those with hearing loss to become aware of fires. The alarm and clock product detects the emergency signals coming from smoke alarm; however, it creates a lower-frequency signal that is audible for those with hearing loss. The product also provides a spoken “FIRE GET OUT” emergency signal. Since the product is designed for those with hearing loss, it also has a bed shaker feature. When attached, the alarm and clock will shake the bed to alert consumers who cannot hear any of the auditory signals of the existing fire.

According to the recall, the bed shaking feature has repeatedly failed to operate. What could it mean for you and your family if an essential feature of a fire alarm fails to operate? Someone who is hard of hearing could fail to hear the auditory cues provided by the product, making the bed shaking feature vital. If there is a fire and the bed shaking feature of the product does not operate, the consumer could suddenly be in a very dangerous situation.

Consumers could fail to wake up or wake up when it is too late due to the defective product. This creates the risk of death or serious injuries. A few examples of the harm that could be suffered as a result of the defective product are listed below:

    • First-degree burns (mild burns similar to sunburn)
    • Second-degree burns (burns to the lower layers of the skin, usually result in blisters)
    • Third-degree burns (burns to all layers of the skin, usually painless due to nerve damage)
    • Fourth-degree burns (burns to all layers of the skin, muscle tissue, nerves, and bones)
    • Smoke inhalation (breathing smoke could cause permanent respiratory damage)
    • Hot-gas inhalation (breathing hot gases could damage the lungs permanently)
    • Oxygen-depleted air inhalation (breathing a mixture of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide that could result in confusion/drowsiness and, in severe cases, death)

Without a doubt, consumers could suffer a number of injuries and even lose their lives. Did you suffer injuries because the defective product failed to alert you about a fire? Did a member of your family lose his or her life due to the defective product? According to the recall, there have been at least 77 reports of a non-operational product with no injuries or fatalities. However, there is the possibility that there are many unreported incidents that included both injuries and deaths.

If you believe that the harm that you and your family suffered resulted from a defective product, you have the right to pursue a claim and receive compensation. Do not hesitate to contact our law firm as soon as possible to discuss your claim with our experienced attorneys.

    Could You File a Claim?

For defective products and product liability claims, you could only sue under specific circumstances. You could only pursue a product liability claim is there is a defect in at least one of the following:

    • The product’s labeling
    • The product’s design
    • The product’s manufacturing

The recall issued by Lifetone Technology does not specify what type of defect (whether in labeling, design, or manufacturing) resulted in the bed shaking feature of the Fire Alarm and Clock to be non-operational. However, it is possible that there is a significant defect in the product, giving affected consumers grounds to pursue a product liability claim. If you are unsure about your right to pursue a defective product claim, do not hesitate to contact our law firm as soon as possible.

    Lifetone Technology’s Negligence and Liability

All companies that provide products to consumers have a duty to provide their consumers that are completely safe for use. All companies must exercise their duty of care towards consumers. The company must constantly inspect their products to ensure that they are safe for consumers. If the company releases a defective product, the company is breaching the duty of care to consumers. The breach of duty could result in injuries or death. In the case of the Lifetone Technology Fire Alarm and Clock, a breach of duty (i.e. releasing a defective product) could result in consumers suffering burn injuries, respiratory harm, and losing their lives, for example. If the harm that you and your family suffered was a direct result of the company’s breach of duty, the company could be liable for the harm that you and your family suffered. If you or a member of your family suffered burn injuries, respiratory injuries, or died as a result of the defective Fire Alarm and Clock negligently made available to consumers by Lifetone Technology, you could file a claim and receive compensation. For more information, do not hesitate to contact our law firm as soon as possible.
