On October 22, 2021, Walmart issued a recall for the Better Homes and Gardens Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones. According to the recall, number 22-007, the recalled product has been found (through tests conducted by the CDC) to contain Burkholderia pseudomallei, a rare and dangerous bacteria that is associated with melioidosis. Melioidosis can be fatal. The CDC is investigating four cases of the condition, including two deaths in the country. The recall has affected approximately 3,900 units.

The following products are included in the recall:

    • 84140411420 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Lavender & Chamomile
    • 84140411421 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Lemon and Mandarin
    • 84140411422 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Lavender
    • 84140411423 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Peppermint
    • 84140411424 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Lime & Eucalyptus
    • 84140411425 Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) Gem Room Spray Sandalwood and Vanilla

The products were sold from February 2021 to October 2021 at around 55 Walmart stores and online for about $4 each.

Walmart has stopped selling the product completely. Consumers affected by the recall are urged to follow all CDC recommendations; they should stop using the recalled product, double bag it in clear zip-top resealable bags, place it in a cardboard box, and return in to a Walmart store for a full refund. Consumers who return the recalled products will also be given a $20 Walmart gift card.

Affected parties are also urged to not open the bottles or attempt to dispose of the bottle themselves. In addition, it is recommended that affected parties wash any sheets/linens that were sprayed by the product and thoroughly wipe down any surfaces that were exposed to the spray.

So far, there have been four confirmed cases of melioidosis (in Texas, Georgia, Minnesota, and Kansas). There have been two deaths associated with the condition, one of which consisted of a child fatality.

    Possible Injuries

Melioidosis is an infection that is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a rare and dangerous bacteria. There are different types of melioidosis infections – localized infections, pulmonary infection, bloodstream infection, and disseminated infection. Unfortunately, the infection can often be confused for other diseases, so it can go undiagnosed and can become fatal.

Each type of infection is associated with different symptoms. Consider the following:

    • Localized infection, symptoms include localized pain/swelling, fever, ulceration, and abscess
    • Pulmonary infection, symptoms include headache, cough, chest pain, high fever, and anorexia
    • Bloodstream infection, symptoms include fever, headache, joint pain, disorientation, respiratory distress, abdominal discomfort
    • Disseminated infection, symptoms include weight loss, fever, stomach pain, chest pain, muscle pain, joint pain, headache, brain infection, seizures

What to do if you were Injured by the Recalled Product

If you or a member of your family suffered harm after being exposed to the bacteria found in the recalled room spray sold by Walmart, then you might have grounds to sue. First and foremost, do not return the product to Walmart in exchange for the gift card that they are offering. Instead, it is important that you act accordingly and prepare to file a lawsuit.

    Recommended Steps:

    • Take photos of any visible harm (the victim might be visibly ill)
    • Seek medical attention as soon as possible
    • Keep the product in a safe place – keep it closed and double bagged as recommended by the CDC
    • Contact Walmart to report the harm that you suffered (do not agree to a refund, store credit, or to return the product)
    • Gather all medical records
    • Gather records of lost wages
    • Seek legal assistance with an experienced product liability lawyer as soon as possible
