Juratoys Issues Recall for Bead Maze Toys due to Choking Risk
On February 6, 2020, Juratoys issued a recall for their bead maze toys, specifically the Sophie la Giraffe Bead Maze toy. According to the recall, number 20-066, the wooden triangle shape piece on the toy fails to meet mandatory federal standards for small parts; therefore, it poses a choking risk to young children. The recall has affected approximately 980 products.
The recalled toy is a round wood-based bead maze toy shaped like the Eiffel Tower; it has a Sophie giraffe figure and three wooden shapes. The three wooden shapes include an orange triangle, a red hear, and a green star – these wooden shapes sort into the wooden base of the toy. The Eiffel Tower is gray and stands approximately 8 inches tall; the wooden base is green and measures 6.75 inches in diameter.
The recall specifically involves the following batch numbers:
- 9321/J09504/022019
- 9474/J09504/042019
- 9549/J09504/052019
The batch numbers can be found on the packaging above the barcode that is on the bottom of the packaging’s base.
The defective toys were sold at specialty toy and gift stores nationwide for approximately $25 each from February 2019 to November 2019.
According to the recall, no injuries have been reported. The company is urging consumers to stop using the recalled bead maze toy, check the toy for the recalled batch numbers, destroy the wooden triangle piece (if the batch number on the toy matches the recalled numbers), and contact the company to receive a free replacement of the triangle piece.
What if your infant was harmed because of the defective product? If you infant choked because of the defective product, you should never consider simply destroying the wooden piece and requesting a free replacement. Is the harm that your child suffered only worth the free replacement piece? Rather that following the recommendations of the company, you should explore the possibility of pursuing a product liability claim,
Depending on the details surrounding you claim, you might have grounds to file a product liability claim for the harm that your child suffered. In other words, you could hold Juratoys accountable for the harm that your child suffered because of their defective product. For more information about your right to file a defective product claim, do not hesitate to contact the experts at Normandie Law Firm at your earliest convenience.

The Severity of the Choking Hazard
As mentioned above, the wooden triangle piece of the bead maze toy that was recently recalled by Juratoys fails to meet the federal standards relevant to small parts in children’s toys; therefore, it represents a choking hazard. Young children have no concept of consequences; they are curious and quick to put things into their mouths. Without a doubt, parents and other caretakers must be vigilant when small parts are near; however, parents and caretakers often let down their guard when young children are only around toys specifically designed for children. After all, they must be safe for them to use.
Unfortunately, the toys designed for young children are not always safe. Small parts, such as the wooden triangle piece of the bead maze, could be swallowed – quickly blocking the airways. If the choking is not immediately addressed, the oxygen deprivation caused by the blockage in the airways can quickly lead to unconsciousness, brain damage, and even death.
There is no doubt that a choking incident can severely impact your child’s life as well as the life of the entire family. When these incidents are caused by defective products, the companies that negligently made the defective products available for consumers could be held accountable.
About Product Liability and Your Right to Sue
Who is responsible for the harm that innocent children suffer because of defective products? Depending on the situation, the companies that make the defective products available could be held responsible for the harm that their consumers suffer. This is based on something called product liability. Based on product liability, all companies owe their consumers a duty of care.
Companies have the duty to ensure that their products are completely safe to be used as intended by consumers. To adhere to this duty of care, companies must subject their products to a number of tests and inspections with the purpose of identifying any defects in design, labeling, or manufacturing. If companies fail to identify any defects or hazards present in their products, they are both breaching their duty of care and putting their consumers at risk of suffering harm.
Exposing consumers to defective products could result in incidents, which could directly lead to innocent consumers suffering harm. Based on product liability, if the harm that consumers suffer can be directly connected to a breached duty of care or a defective product, the company could be held accountable for all the harm suffered. This means that consumers might have grounds to take legal action against the liable company and possibly recover compensation.
If you would like to learn more about product liability as well as your right to sue and file a product liability claim, do not hesitate to contact the experts at our law firm at your earliest convenience. Could you really be eligible to receive monetary compensation for the harm that your child suffered? How much compensation could you be eligible to receive? What type of compensation could you be awarded? The specific type and amount of compensation that you could be eligible to receive if you successfully file a product liability claim against Juratoys or any other negligent company will always depend on the details surrounding your claim.
Although every product liability claim is different, some claims could lead to the recovery of some of the following categories of compensation:
- Medical expenses
- Lost earnings
- Pain and suffering

- Funeral and burial costs
- Punitive damages

The Important Steps to Consider
Depending on the details surrounding the harm that your child suffered, you might have grounds to take legal action. However, there are a number of steps that you should follow in preparation of taking legal action.
Consider the following recommendations:
- Take photos of any physical injuries suffered (this might be impossible if there were no clear physical injuries; however, if your child’s skin changed color because of the choking, it could be beneficial to take photos given that it is safe to do so)
- Take photos of the defective product (if possible, of the small part that caused the choking, given that it was recovered)
- Seek medical attention immediately (emergency services might be required)
- Contact the company (report the defective product and the harm that your child suffered)
- Never agree to return the defective product, get a free replacement/repair, or to get a full refund/voucher (agreeing to any of these will essentially lead to forfeiting the right to sue)
- Gather all relevant records (including medical records as well as purchase records)
- Speak to witnesses (if witnesses are available, gather their contact information for later reference)
- Find an attorney (seek the expertise of a product liability lawyer)
When you follow the steps listed above, you are essentially gathering important tools to eventually pursue a claim. If you would like to learn more about the importance of following these steps, do not hesitate to contact our experts at your earliest convenience.
You Should Act Promptly
Your infant was harmed by a defective product; now, what? Sure, you can file a claim – and hold the negligent company accountable for the harm that your child suffered. But did you know that your claim is subject to a deadline? Did you know that you only have a limited amount of time to pursue your claim?
All claims are subject to statutes of limitations. A statute of limitations determines the specific length of time that claimants have to pursue their claims. If claimants fail to file their claims within the appropriate length of time, they will lose their right to sue – along with the right to sue, they will also lose their right to recover any form of compensation for the harm that they suffered.
What deadline applies to your claim? In general, product liability claims in California are subject to a two-year statute of limitations. This means that the parties affected by defective products only have two years to file their claims. Although this is a strict timeline, it is possible for exceptions to apply. If any exceptions apply to your claim, the deadline could be tolled – essentially giving you more time to sue.
To ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the deadline and any possible exceptions that might apply to your claim, do not hesitate to contact our law firm at your earliest convenience. Our lawyers are ready to provide you with all the information that you need to file your product liability claim on time.
