On September 2, 2020, IMMI issued a recall for their SubZero 4-point and Click6 6-point UTV harnesses. According to the recall, recall number 20-174, the affected harnesses can be missing stitching; therefore, it can fail to properly restrain occupants of UTVs in the case of a crash. This represents a significant injury risk to consumers. The recall has affected approximately 162,000 products.
The recall specifically involves the IMMI SubZero 4-point and Click6 6-point harnesses; these harnesses were installed in the Polaris (model years 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020) RZR XP1000, RZR Turbo, RZR TurboS, and RZR Pro XP UTVs.
The harnesses were also available as aftermarket accessories for the following UTVs:
- Kawasaki Teryx KRX®1000 SxS
- Can-Am Maverick
- Can-Am Maverick X3,
- Polaris RZR XP1000
- RZR Turbo
- RZR TurboS
- RZR Pro XP
The harnesses either have “Polaris,” “Kawasaki,” or “Can-Am” printed on the front of the harness. Information on the IMMI part numbers and manufacture dates affected by the recall can be found here. Relevant information can be found on labels on the harnesses.
The recalled harnesses were available at Polaris, Kawasaki, and Can-Am dealerships around the country from April 2014 through May 2020; the Sub-Zero harnesses ranged in price from $160 through $240, while the Click6 harnesses ranged in price from $250 through $550.
According to IMMI, there have been at least seven reports of the harnesses lacking stitching in at least one of the attachment points; however, no injuries or property damage have been reported associated with the defective product.
The company is urging all affected consumers to immediately stop using the recalled harnesses until they have been inspected by an authorized dealer; the company is offering free replacement harnesses to all consumers that have harnesses with missing stitching.
If your UTV harness is included in the recall and the defective harness has already contributed to the harm that you or a member of your family suffered, you should definitely not follow any of the suggestions made by the company. Instead, you should explore the legal options available to you and your family. Based on the specific situation, you might have grounds to pursue a claim – you could even be eligible to recover monetary compensation.

The Harm that Consumers Could Suffer
As explained above, the harnesses are missing stitching in some areas, which can result in the harness failing to restrain consumers in a UTV crash. Without a doubt, this represents a significant injury hazard. These harnesses are designed to prevent injuries during crashes; since they are defective, however, they fail to keep consumers safe during crashes. The defective harnesses could contribute to significant injuries, including but not limited to some of the following:
- Head injuries
- Brain injuries
- Facial injuries
- Neck injuries
- Back injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Fractures
- Joint injuries
- Nerve injuries
- Muscle injuries
- Ligament damage
- Lacerations
- Sprains and strains
- Scrapes and bruises
Without a doubt, some of the injuries that consumers could suffer in UTV accidents due to defective harnesses can be fatal. Regardless of the harm that you or a member of your family suffered, you might have the right to pursue an injury claim.
Understanding Product Liability
Whether the defective product resulted in injuries or death, you might have grounds to sue – specifically, you could file a product liability claim. If the harm that you or a member of your family suffered was associated with a defect in product design, labeling, or manufacturing, for instance, you could sue. This is because, based on product liability, consumers are owed a duty of care – a duty to ensure that their products are completely safe for their consumers to use. To ensure the safety of their products, companies must test and inspect their products thoroughly to be able to identify any dangerous conditions in their products. Unfortunately, companies can breach their duty of care – they can fail to identify defects, make defective products available to consumers, and put their consumers at risk of suffering harm. When a defective product, such as a defective harness, directly contributes to the harm that a consumer suffers, the company that made the defective product available for purchase could be liable for the resulting harm. This means that you, the consumer, could sue the company.
Would you like to learn more about your right to sue based on the concept of product liability? If so, do not hesitate to seek legal assistance with the experts at our firm as soon as possible. Our lawyers will evaluate your claim and provide you with the guidance that you need to pursue your product liability claim and reach a successful claim outcome.

The Statute of Limitations
All claims are subject to a statue of limitations; the statute of limitations that applies to your claim determines the specific length of time that you have to sue. If you do not file your claim within the time that applies, you could lose your right to sue for the harm that you or a member of your family suffered. In California, product liability claims are normally subject to a two-year statute of limitations. Because of this, claimants only have a total of two years to pursue their claims. Although the deadline to sue is strict, certain exceptions could apply, resulting in a tolled statute of limitations. To ensure that you have all the information that you need to file your claim on time, do not hesitate to speak with the experts at our firm immediately.
