New Yorker Left Partially Blind After Corona Bottle Explodes

A 57-year-old man from Queens was injured when a Corona beer bottle randomly exploded as he placed it into a cooler. Glass shards from the bottle shot into his eye, requiring him to get rushed to the emergency room to undergo surgery. He later underwent another surgery to try and restore his vision, but he was still left partially blinded, with only 20% of his vision in his damaged eye.

Another individual in 2017 was injured by an exploding Corona bottle under similar circumstances – he placed the bottle into the cooler and the bottle simply exploded.

The bottles can be traced to the same bottling plant, and the lawyer representing the men claims that Corona is manufacturing defective bottles in some way.

The risks of these explosions are quite apparent – beer bottles can be kept out in the open on shelves and on counters, in coolers and refrigerators, in the aisles at supermarkets, and more. A random explosion can hurt anyone nearby, from children to adults. The damages can be serious – individuals have already suffered eye injuries, but explosions can also cause glass to get stuck in parts of the body and face, leading to infections. Large shards may also create large lacerations and cuts.

If you have been injured by an exploding Corona bottle or any other beer bottle, contact Normandie Law Firm in Los Angeles to pursue legal action.

    Causes of Exploding Bottles

Bottles should not spontaneously explode, but there are some potential causes. Most commonly, a high level of carbonation in the bottle can cause the pressure to build up, causing the bottle to slightly expand to accommodate the gas. Carbon dioxide is not soluble in the beer and it will instead take up the empty space in the bottle. When the pressure gets too much, the bottle will simply explode.

Sudden changes in temperature have been linked to exploding bottles as well. Transporting a beer directly from a warm enclosure to a cooler could force a reaction.

Another possibility lies with the type of glass the bottle was manufactured with; thin glass will be more likely to explode because it is less stable than thicker glass.

Corona may have been using thin glass for that bath of bottles, or its machines may have allowed too much carbon dioxide into the bottles.

    Product Liability Claim against Corona

If you are injured by an exploding bottle, you should seek compensation from Corona in the form of a product liability lawsuit. This lawsuit will enable you to receive ample compensation for your damages.

A company may be held liable for the defective product in a number of ways: there may have been a design flaw prior to manufacturing, a manufacturing error that caused some products to have issues, or a lack of hazard or warning labels on the product or packaging. In the case of Corona bottles exploding, there was likely a manufacturing error at the plant, whether during the creation of the glass bottles or during the actual bottling of the beer.

You can take the following steps to ensure that you have the best chance of winning your claim:

Do not return the item to the manufacturer so you can receive a refund. The manufacturer will usually destroy the evidence or withhold it, and you will not be able to present it as proof of the cause of your injuries if you do not have the evidence itself.

You should not tamper with the item or other items to try and recreate the issue. If you do, the company may be able to claim that there is no telling who or what caused the initial problem that affected you, and you could easily be at fault.

If you were hurt, immediately seek medical treatment. You should not have a gap in medical treatment; if there is a long period of time between the injury and a doctor’s visit or emergency room visit, the company can say that you were not seriously hurt or that your injuries were caused by something else.

You also must hold on to the receipt to show that you rightfully purchased the product.

Most importantly, though, you should contact a skilled product liability lawyer. Our team of attorneys at Normandie Law Firm can help you win your case.
