On April 4, 2024, Empower Brands recalled their BLACK+DECKER Model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers. Based on the recall, number 24-181, the Easy Garment Steamers can expel, spray, or leak hot water during use, which poses a burn risk. The defective steamers were available in-store and online via Walmart, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, www.blackanddeckerappliances.com, and other retailers. The products were available for purchase for prices ranging from $14 to $23 from June 2021 to February 2024.
Empower Brands has received over 300 reports of hot water expelling from the garment steamers. These reports include 82 reports of burn injuries (7 of them second-degree burns). 94 of these reports include garment steamers that were repaired through the original recall in November 2022 or models with updated designs; these include 19 burn injuries.
