Electric Bicycles Are Extremely Dangerous…Because No One Understands How They Really Work!

Electric bicycles may be all the rage in this country, but other countries are already starting to regulate their use. In Europe for example, electric bikes can only go up to 16 mph (or 25 km/h) as a maximum speed, and may require helmets, age limit requirements and restrictions for use in public areas where pedestrians are walking. In Canada, there is no maximum weight limit on an e-bike, do not allow drivers with DUI convictions to ride the e-bikes, and need a designation if the bike is power assisted or not.

Why do we need to know about other countries? Well, we can understand that the laws of the United States regarding e-bikes are different than those of other nations. Meaning, that someone coming from another country to the United States, working for Grubhub riding an e-bike may or may not understand our laws regarding these bikes on the roads.

In the United States, e-bike riders are generally riding a “low speed” e-bike, under 20 mph (32km/h). But in California, e-bikes are classified as conventional bicycles, and cannot go over 28 mph. The California rules state that e-bikes:

    • Are Class I, providing 20 mph pedal assist only, with no throttle
    • Are Class II, providing 20 mph throttle assist and pedal assist (power when the rider pedals or not, but stops power when the bike reaches 20 mph)
    • Are Class III, providing pedal assist no throttle, if an e-bike goes up to 28 mph
    • Must walk a bike on a sidewalk, never ride down the sidewalks with pedestrians
    • Need drivers to be aged 16 years old or older
    • Do not require a license or registration for using the e-bike
    • The motor throttle cannot exceed 750 watts
    • Must travel on the roads
    • Must not ride on dedicated bike paths unless adjacent to a roadway
    • Must wear highly reflective and highly visible clothing, and must use red rear light and reflectors for nighttime riding
    • Should not take passengers unless can do so safely
    • Must signal intentions to change lanes and turn

If all of this sounds slightly confusing, you are not alone. This shows that e-bikes can go fast on the roads, and the driver may not know how to safely stop the bike or even know how to avoid a collision with a pedestrian in time to stop an accident. Grubhub delivery bicyclists can be on the sidewalks either picking up or delivering an order, even though they are prohibited from riding on the sidewalks completely! You will not realize you are even in the path of a Grubhub delivery bicyclist until you are hit, injured and down on the ground in pain from your personal injuries.
