A high school music teamer, Da’Jon James (age 27), was arrested recently in Boulder, Colorado. He was accused of sexual misconduct by four of his female students; he is also being investigated for additional allegations made against him during his time teaching at a boarding school in Carpinteria.
He was arrested by the sheriffs on two felony counts of sexual assault on a child by person in a position of trust in addition to one misdemeanor count of unlawful sexual contact. The students, from Dawson School (a private school), and their parents alleged that there was fondling as well as inappropriate kissing (on the foreheads of the students). Additional allegations included inappropriate language, prolonged hugging, inappropriate hugging, and sexually explicit imagery.
James was identified as a suspect in an investigation into sexual abuse and misconduct at Cate School in Carpinteria, in Santa Barbara County. The investigation started after a mandated reporter came forward regarding allegations made about a former teacher. However, the investigation appears to involve both current students and former students.
According to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department, they are looking into abuse that could go back decades. The current investigation started in October 2020, but there have been allegations made in the past, in which the school failed to take any action. When the school eventually fired James, they didn’t take any measures to ensure that the music teacher had no further access to students – and that’s how he ended up working in another school at another state.
