What Hospitals Treat CRPS & RSD in Bakersfield, CA?

Do you live in the Bakersfield area and suffer from the chronic nerve disorder complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS); often called by its alternative name reflex sympathetic dystrophy(RSD)?  If so it may be in your best interest to seek medical attention from a specialized physician. Having a doctor, nurse, or medical facility that is trained at treating CRPS can make the difference between mitigating the day-to-day discomfort this condition can cause, and suffering from the debilitating pains that currently have no cure. While you can receive treatment from a general practitioner, there is still very little known about the CRPS condition. As a result, general treatment could cause further pain and suffering, which may or may not improve your condition in the long run. In this article, we will cover the CRPS and RSD condition, the kind of symptoms the condition can cause, what causes this disorder of the nervous system, and what you can do to seek treatment.

What is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
CRPS or complex regional pain syndrome is a disorder of the nervous system which inflicts damage to the nerves that control blood vessels and sweat glands. This damage can be inflicted via physical trauma, or as recent studies have shown, can arise as a result of a heart attack or stroke. As mentioned prior, there is still very little known about the condition, and as such, there is still no cure. Often, a general practitioner will misdiagnose the condition as something else, leading to a worsening of the symptoms. However, it is important to note that the symptoms CRPS can cause are not universal. One patient suffering from CRPS may experience all of the recorded symptoms, while another may experience only one or two of the symptoms. To give you an idea of what kind of damages CRPS can cause, we’ve included a list of common symptoms that CRPS victims experience:

    • Inflammation of the afflicted area: The area that is afflicted with CRPS often swells as a result. This inflammation is often characterized as a bruising, mottling, or reddening of the skin.
    • Spasms: The damage to the nervous system results in muscle spasms, which can affect everyday mobility.
    • Insomnia and other mood disorders: CRPS has also been shown to cause significant changes to the limbic system causing things like short-term memory loss, disruptions in sleep patterns, and mental confusion.
    • Decreased mobility of affected area: Some patients have complained of being unable to effectively move the part of the body affected by this condition. This includes joint stiffness as well and can require extensive physical therapy to reach some form of recovery.
    • Spreading: Sometimes, when left untreated, CRPS can spread from the originally affected area to other parts of the body, making the condition far more difficult to treat.

As stated before there is still very little known about the condition, however, medical professionals have been able to identify two main forms of CRPS. These main forms of CRPS are bulleted below for your reference:

    • CRPS Form I: CRPS I is identified as a nerve disorder that occurs after a minor injury. This form of CRPS usually afflicts the arms or the legs, and are caused by injuries like a break or fracture, a puncture injury, infections, or a spinal cord injury. It is important to note that 90% of all CRPS cases are diagnosed as form I
    • CRPS Form II: Injury often causes CRPS II to a specific nerve. This is the least common form of CRPS, taking up as little as 10% of all diagnosed CRPS cases.

Studies have shown that the sooner you receive adequate treatment for your CRPS condition, the more likely you will be able to mitigate the day-to-day this condition can cause. However, general practitioners often misdiagnose the condition, and as a result, can lead to a patient’s poor response to treatment. As stated prior, CRPS is caused by damage to the nerves which control the sweat glands and the blood vessels. When the nerves are damaged, they lose the ability to fulfill their primary function and as a result, cause the symptoms mentioned above. Studies of the condition have shown that adults between ages 40 and 60 are most likely to develop the disorder more than any other group; however, it is important to note that anyone at any age can be diagnosed with the condition. While it is important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible for any damage to the nervous system, in regards to CRPS it is in your best interest that you seek medical attention from a CRPS specialist or a neurologist that is experienced at treating the condition.
