1 Adult, 1 Student Critically Injured After 25-Foot Tree Branch Falls at Elementary School in Ojai | 9-25-2017

According to a report by the Ventura County Fire Department, five people were left injured on September 25th, after a 25-foot branch from a large elm tree fell at an elementary school in Ojai. The incident occurred at TopaTopa Elementary School at around 1:15 p.m. Of the five injured, one adult and one student were left with critical injuries. One of the critically injured was airlifted from the scene and taken to a local trauma center; the other was transported to a trauma center via ground ambulance. Of the three other injured people, two suffered moderate injuries, while another was treated at the scene by emergency teams. The tree branch was reported to be 25 feet long and eight inches in diameter. The tree is expected to be removed from the premises immediately. A local fire official said it is common for branches to fall from trees in Ojai due to the drought and that even a tree that appears healthy on the outside is still susceptible to a fall. The identity of the victims has yet to be released, as has the nature of their injuries and how the tree fell.
